Torque-free Commutator - Coaxial
Torque-free Commutator - Coaxial
SKU: OEPS-7759
The Torque-free Coaxial Commutator enables tangle-free connection between a stationary data acquisition device and the headstage of a freely-moving animal. It is compatible with any ONIX headstage and Miniscope V4. Torque-free active commutation is driven by interfacing with a variety of head-orientation tracking technologies including:
Recording devices that contain on-board Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs):
Computer vision:
Works in Bonsai for acquisition with the ONIX Acquisition Sytem and Miniscope DAQ. Integration with the Miniscope DAQ’s own software is coming soon.
The commutator is open source and easy to extend for custom miniscopes, headstages, etc.
Package includes:
1 Torque-free Coaxial Commutator

The purpose of Open Ephys Commutators is to promote natural animal behavior by nearly eliminating mechanical stress during neurophysiology experiments. This is achieved by minimizing torque exerted on the animal during optical or electrophysiological recordings by rotating the tether in lock step with the animal’s real-time orientation. Below, Ophelia the mouse shows off the commutator:
Features include:
Automatic control using head-mounted IMU sensors or computer vision
Direct user control via open-source software as well as manual control buttons
Silent operation and precise motion (256 uSteps) thanks to Trinamic stepper driver
Mountable to standard optical tables and 80/20 rails
Single USB connection for power and control
Toggleable LED feedback
