Differences Between Headstages
Unipolar headstages are typically used with small geometry electrodes with a global reference for isolating single-units. We carry two unipolar headstages with different profile and probe connectors:
the low-profile SPI Headstage 64ch which features a Hirose connector compatible with our ShuttleDrive tetrode implant
the SPI headstage 32 ch for Omnetics-based silicon probes
Bipolar headstages are optimal for recordings with electrodes of similar impedance and allow analog reference patterns. We carry one bipolar headstage:
- the SPI headstage 16 ch bipolar optimal for recordings with electrodes of similar impedance, such as EMG arrays
The headstages included in the Starter Bundle 3D are 3D capable. They have an on-board 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) which senses rotational movements (pitch, yaw, and roll). This information can be used to correlate neural activity with behavioral states and to drive our Torque-free SPI Commutator.
